Business Hours Overlap Guide

Planning a call with colleagues overseas? Here are the best windows where standard business hours (9 AM – 5 PM) overlap between popular city pairs.

💼

New York ↔ London

Best overlap: 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM EST (2:00 PM – 5:00 PM GMT). A 3-hour window during afternoon London time and morning New York time. Most transatlantic meetings are scheduled in this slot.

💼

London ↔ Singapore

Best overlap: 9:00 AM – 11:00 AM GMT (5:00 PM – 7:00 PM SGT). A narrow 2-hour window. For longer meetings, one side typically adjusts to early morning or late evening hours.

💼

New York ↔ Tokyo

Minimal overlap during standard hours. 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM EST = 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM JST. Most teams use async communication or alternate early/late meetings between the two offices.

💼

San Francisco ↔ Berlin

Best overlap: 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM PST (5:00 PM – 6:00 PM CET). Only a 1-hour window, making real-time collaboration challenging. Many US-EU distributed teams rely on morning standups Pacific time.

💼

Dubai ↔ New York

Best overlap: 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM GST (9:00 AM – 1:00 PM EST). A generous 4-hour window makes Dubai a surprisingly convenient hub for transatlantic and Asian business coordination.

💼

Sydney ↔ London

Best overlap: 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM AEST (9:00 PM – 10:00 PM GMT previous day). Extremely limited. Teams typically rotate meeting times or use recorded video updates for async handoffs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a time zone and why do they exist?
A time zone is a region of the globe that observes a uniform standard time. Time zones exist because the Earth rotates 360 degrees every 24 hours, meaning the sun is directly overhead at different times in different locations. Without time zones, noon would occur at very different clock times depending on longitude. The system was formalized in the late 19th century to coordinate railway schedules and telegraph communication.
How does the World Clock time converter work?
Our converter uses the browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat API with IANA timezone identifiers. When you select a source zone and enter a time, we construct a Date object in that zone, then format it in every other zone using the same API. This ensures full accuracy, including DST offsets, half-hour zones like India (UTC+5:30), and quarter-hour zones like Nepal (UTC+5:45).
Does the World Clock handle Daylight Saving Time?
Yes, fully automatically. The IANA timezone database (tz database) built into every modern browser includes historical, current, and planned DST rules for every timezone worldwide. When clocks spring forward or fall back, our display adjusts immediately without any manual intervention.
What is UTC and how does it relate to GMT?
UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the primary time standard used worldwide. It is effectively the modern successor to GMT (Greenwich Mean Time). While GMT is technically a time zone, UTC is a time standard maintained by atomic clocks. In everyday use, UTC and GMT show the same time, but UTC is the term used in computing, aviation, and international coordination.
Can I use this world clock offline?
Yes. Once the page has loaded in your browser, all clock and converter functionality works without an internet connection. Time calculations use your device's system clock and the browser's built-in timezone data. The only feature that requires connectivity is loading the Inter and JetBrains Mono web fonts on first visit.
How accurate are the displayed times?
The times are as accurate as your device's system clock. Modern operating systems synchronize with NTP (Network Time Protocol) servers automatically, keeping your clock accurate to within milliseconds. Our display refreshes every second, so the maximum visual lag is under one second from true time.
What is an IANA timezone identifier?
IANA timezone identifiers follow the "Area/Location" format, such as "America/New_York" or "Asia/Tokyo". They uniquely identify a region's complete timekeeping rules, including the current UTC offset, DST transitions, and historical rule changes. Unlike simple UTC offsets (which change with DST), an IANA identifier always resolves to the correct time for any date.
Which browsers are supported?
World Clock works in all modern browsers: Chrome 63+, Firefox 52+, Safari 10+, Edge 79+, and their mobile equivalents. This covers approximately 97% of global browser usage according to caniuse.com data. Internet Explorer is not supported due to missing Intl.DateTimeFormat timezone features.
How do I schedule a meeting across multiple time zones?
Use our Time Converter: select your own timezone, enter your preferred meeting date and time, then click Convert. Scan the results to find a time that falls within business hours (typically 9 AM to 5 PM) for all participants. Times shown in amber indicate the next day, which helps you avoid accidentally scheduling across the International Date Line.
What are half-hour and quarter-hour time zones?
Not all time zones are full-hour offsets from UTC. India uses UTC+5:30, Iran uses UTC+3:30, Afghanistan uses UTC+4:30, Myanmar uses UTC+6:30, and Nepal uses UTC+5:45. The Chatham Islands (New Zealand) use UTC+12:45. Our clock handles all of these correctly through the IANA database.
Why do some countries not observe Daylight Saving Time?
Countries near the equator (such as Singapore, Colombia, Kenya) see minimal variation in daylight hours throughout the year, making DST unnecessary. Other countries have abolished it for economic or social reasons — Arizona (US), Russia, and Brazil are notable examples. Japan, China, India, and most of Southeast Asia also do not observe DST.
What is the International Date Line?
The International Date Line (IDL) is an imaginary line running roughly along the 180th meridian in the Pacific Ocean. When you cross it westward, you skip ahead one calendar day; crossing eastward, you repeat a day. This is why Auckland (UTC+12) and Honolulu (UTC-10) can be 22 hours apart despite being in the same ocean.
How many time zones does the world actually have?
While the theoretical model suggests 24 one-hour zones, the real world has approximately 38 distinct UTC offsets in active use, including half-hour and quarter-hour offsets. Politically drawn borders mean some countries span multiple zones while others use a single zone for the entire nation (China uses UTC+8 coast to coast).
What timezone does the International Space Station use?
The International Space Station (ISS) uses Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) as its official timezone. Since the ISS orbits Earth approximately every 90 minutes and experiences 16 sunrises per day, using UTC provides a consistent reference for crew scheduling, mission operations, and coordination with ground control centers worldwide.
How do I convert military time to standard time?
Military (24-hour) time maps directly: 0000–1159 is 12:00 AM to 11:59 AM, and 1200–2359 is 12:00 PM to 11:59 PM. To convert hours 13–23, subtract 12 (e.g., 1500 = 3:00 PM). Our clock's 24H/12H toggle lets you switch between formats instantly.
Can I use World Clock for flight arrival time calculations?
Yes. Enter your departure city's timezone and departure time in the converter. Then find your destination city in the results to see the local time at that moment. Add your flight duration to the departure time, re-enter it, and convert again — the result shows your landing time in the destination's local timezone.
